Thank you Victimizer.

This song is an eerie acknowledgment of both the white and black sides of her family. Even within all the joy and love, there was also shame and disconnection on each side. This is what Monique speaks to- and instead of making them wrong, she simply points out painful truths of her experience thanking them for making her who she is - a self-sufficient, self-reliant, loving human being. It’s her way of saying it’s water under the bridge, but also acknowledging that she knows where people have come from in their times of pain and discomfort.

Thank you Victimizer.

I know that I have been your trouble
and every time you see my face you squirm and struggle
I'm the edgy piece of your puzzle

you taint your blood in the jungle
stripped your pass, no more luxurious bubble
watch your wide world crumble

I swallow my pride, taste your shame
you think we're different, got the same name
I had to make myself hollow
to keep you safe from your shadow

I really want to thank you
I really want to thank you
I really want to thank you
I really want to thank you
I do

you don't trust me down to the marrow
look down your nose, tighten up and the conversation narrows
eyes shooting poison arrows

I made you learn to love your oppressor
I wear your skin does that make me your successor?
your burden is my treasure!
